Walk along the Seymaz river (Geneva)
At the end of last year, I went on a walk along the Seymaz river, which flows entirely inside the canton of Geneva: Starting from Château de Rouelbeau (Rouelbeau Castle), I followed its entire course until the confluence with the Arve.
Here is an official brochure about the river (PDF).
Walk in Cran-Gevrier & Annecy
During winter 2020, I went on a short walk from Cran-Gevrier to the center of Annecy.
Abandoned train tracks in Annecy & Tunnel de la Puya
The railway line from Annecy to Albertville started operating in 1901 and closed to passenger traffic in 1938. Freight traffic kept running until 1964 when it shut down for good. In 1975, parts of the line on the west side of Lake Annecy were converted into a bike path: The Voie Verte du Lac d’Annecy. More of the line (until Ugine, near Albertville) was converted later in 2005. However, some of the rails in Annecy, west of the train station until a bit before Tunnel de la Puya (under the Semnoz), still remain. There is also a section of abandoned tracks in the Zone Industrielle de Vovray that used to be connected to the old Annecy-Albertville line.
I walked alongside those train tracks last fall: First, I walked from the train station to the ends of the train tracks in Vovray. Some parts were fenced off so I had to walk around. Some other time, I went back to the place where the line branched off towards Albertville and followed its course until Tunnel de la Puya, which was walled off. I walked on the Semnoz to get to the other side, in Sevrier. The exit of the tunnel was still open. I walked a little in the tunnel from there, but it was pretty dark so I didn’t go very far.
Walk from Thonon-les-Bains to Yvoire through Châteaux des Allinges
Last spring, I went on a walk in Haute-Savoie near Lake Geneva (Lac Léman): Starting from Thonon-les-Bains, I walked to Yvoire, a small medieval town by the lake, passing through the Châteaux des Allinges (Castles of Allinges) on the way.
Bellegarde-sur-Valserine
While waiting for a bus to Nantua, I stopped at Bellegarde-sur-Valserine, a city west of Geneva, for about an hour in early morning. I walked around, visited a park along the Rhône then went back to the train station.
Camino de Santiago / Via Gebennensis: Walk from Col du Mont Sion to Frangy
At the end of winter, I walked on the Via Gebennensis from Col du Mont Sion to Frangy, continuing the Camino de Santiago where I had left off the last time.
La Roche-sur-Foron
La Roche-sur-Foron is a town in Haute-Savoie, located between Annecy and Annemasse. It used to be the capital of the County of Geneva in earlier medieval times, until it was moved to Annecy. I went there on a day trip at the beginning of Spring: I walked around the medieval town and in the nature around it.
Walk in Sources du Lac d'Annecy
Last winter, I went on a walk in the area south of Lake Annecy, in the group of towns ("Communauté de Communes") known as Sources du Lac d’Annecy, where the main rivers flowing into the lake (Ire and Eau Morte) originate.
Camino de Santiago / Via Gebennensis: Walk from Geneva to Col du Mont Sion
Last winter, I walked a small part of the Camino de Santiago: I took the Via Gebennensis from Cathédrale Saint-Pierre in Geneva to Col du Mont Sion, in Haute-Savoie.
