As mentioned in the previous post about Église Notre-Dame du Val-de-Grâce, the Musée du Service de Santé des Armées (Museum of the Army Medical Corps) is located next to the church. The museum traces its origins back to the 19th century. At first merely an anatomy collection for teaching purposes, it gradually grew as a result of bequests to become the repository of army medical corps history.
The Musée Bourdelle is an art museum located in Montparnasse, Paris. It preserves the studio of sculptor Antoine Bourdelle and also contains more than 500 of his works including marble, plaster, and bronze statues, paintings, pastels, fresco sketches, and Bourdelle’s personal collection of works from other artists. Admission to the permanent collections is free, but there is a charge for temporary exhibits.
The Palais de la Porte Dorée is an exhibit hall located near Bois de Vincennes, in Paris. It was constructed for the Paris Colonial Exhibition, in 1931. It now houses a tropical aquarium and the Museum of Immigration.
Les Invalides is a landmark of Paris which houses the Musée de l’Armée, the military museum of the Army of France. Its most visible and famous feature is the Dôme des Invalides, a large church under which Emperor Napoléon Bonaparte is buried, along with other French war heroes.
The Fondation Louis Vuitton is a museum financed by the LVMH corporation and located in the Bois de Boulogne in Paris. The building was designed by architect Frank Gehry.
Het Schip (“The Ship”) is an apartment building in the Spaarndammerbuurt district of Amsterdam. It was designed in 1919 by Michel de Klerk as a block of housing for the working class and follows the Brick Expressionism style of the Amsterdam School of architecture. The building also includes a post office, which now hosts the visitor center of the Museum. Guided tours start there.
On my last day in Dubai, I checked out from my hotel early and headed to the Dubai Creek area. I started first in Bur Dubai, where the original inhabitants of Dubai settled in the early 19th century. I walked along the Creek (the promenade is interrupted by construction work though). I then visited the Dubai Museum and walked in the area. I crossed the Dubai Creek using one of the many abras and arrived in Deira, where I visited the souk next. I crossed the Creek again: I had to be at the Burj Khalifa to visit the observatory (the ticket was tied to a specific time) so I left the area for a few hours. When I came back, I continued at the same point as I left and visited the Heritage Village in Bur Dubai. There was not much activity there, maybe because it was a bit late. I walked along the Creek until I reached the mouth, then settled at a café, smoking sheesha until nightfall. After that, I crossed the Creek again to visit the spice and gold souks of Deira at night. Then it was time to go to the airport to catch my plane back to Lahore.
While I was in Omiya for hanami, I also took the opportunity to visit the Omiya Bonsai Village. It is an area north of Omiya Park known as one of the most outstanding bonsai cultivating areas in Japan. This is where the Omiya Bonsai Art Museum is located, as well as numerous bonsai nurseries. A large bonsai festival (大盆栽まつり) is also held every year from May 3rd to May 5th.
The National Art Center, Tokyo is a museum in Roppongi. Instead of maintaining a permanent collection, it focuses on serving as a venue for various art exhibitions. The architect for the building was Kisho Kurokawa. The facility has 47,960 m² of floor space on a 30,000 m² site with four stories above ground and one below.
