After the Palace of Fine Arts, I entered the Presidio of San Francisco then walked along a beach to the Golden Gate Bridge, at the northern tip of the park. I walked on the bridge until the halfway point then came back to land and took a trail in the hills along the Pacific ocean.
Continuing the hike from Hinohara Village to Lake Okutama. After Mount Mito, I stayed in the Tokyo Citizens’ Forest (Tomin-no-Mori) and went down towards Mito Waterfall then continued to Lake Okutama. Check Part 1 for the map.
At the end of the hike to Mount Ougi and Mount Momokura, I went to have a look at the so-called Monkey Bridge (猿橋; Saruhashi), which gave its name to the area of Otsuki surrounding it. It is a wooden bridge spanning the Sagami River and also one of the three unusual bridges of Japan. This page has some details on its construction (and the list of unusual bridges). After the bridge, I went to the nearby Saruhashi Park before going to the train station and back to Tokyo.
After getting down from Mount Tsukiyomi, I walked the Ikoi trail (奥多摩湖いこいの路). It is a mostly flat path that follows the south bank of Lake Okutama from the Ogouchi Dam to the Yama-no-Furusato Village. The autumn colors were quite nice in the sunset. Very relaxing after the mountains! Although I only did a short section, the whole trail takes about 4 hours.
After the Village, the Ikoi trail gives way to the Lakeside Path (湖畔の小道), which ends at the floating Mugiyama-no-Ukihashi (麦山の浮橋) bridge (aka Drum Bridge). The bridge takes walkers across the lake, next to the Ogouchi Shrine on the north bank. However, it is sometimes removed in case of drought (this blog should have some up-to-date info on closures).
The Rainbow Bridge is a 798-meter long bridge crossing Tokyo Bay between Shibaura and Odaiba. It is accessible to pedestrians and can be used to cross the Bay on foot, all the way to Odaiba.
Tokyo Gate Bridge (aka “Dinosaur Bridge”) is a 2,618-meter long bridge completed in 2012. It crossesTokyo Bay from Wakasu Island to Chuo Bohatei (“Central Breakwater”). Interestingly, both sites are artificial islands made out of trash, although only Chuo Bohatei is still active and serves as the final disposal site of waste from all of Tokyo. The bridge then leads to a tunnel emerging in Jonanjima Seaside Park, near Haneda Airport and the Port of Tokyo.
It is possible to walk on the bridge, starting from a tower in Wakasu Park (map). However, the tower on the other side is closed, so you have to double back. Access to the bridge is free but it closes at 5pm.
